What this can and can't tell you
- It reads structure, not usage. A chart-of-accounts export has no transaction counts, so it can't tell you which accounts are barely used — the strongest signal for merging. Run a transaction count per account in your ledger for that.
- Overlap detection is a prompt, not a verdict. "Software" and "Subscriptions" may be a deliberate split in your business. The check surfaces the pairs; the judgement is yours.
- Some accounts are meant to be thin. Tax and compliance accounts earn their place regardless of volume.
- It doesn't see your transactions at all — so it says nothing about whether anything is coded correctly. That's the other half of the problem, and it's what the app does.
The other half: are transactions in the right accounts?
Ledger Optics compares every transaction against its peers and shows the ones that disagree. Free, read-only, and nothing is written back without your approval.
